Forklift Mast Types Explained: Simplex, Duplex and Triplex
The mast is the assembly that raises and lowers the forks. Choosing the right mast affects lifting height, overhead clearance, and suitability for the facility.
Mast terminology and available configurations can vary by manufacturer, so always confirm the exact specifications for the model being quoted.
1. Simplex Mast
A simplex mast generally uses a single main mast stage. It may suit applications with more modest lifting-height requirements, depending on the forklift design.
Check its maximum lift height and overall dimensions in the lowered position.
2. Duplex Mast
A duplex mast generally uses two mast stages. Depending on the design, it may provide a greater lifting height while meeting particular overhead-clearance requirements.
Confirm free lift, lowered height, and extended height for the proposed configuration.
3. Triplex Mast
A triplex mast generally uses three mast stages and may support greater lifting heights in a more compact lowered configuration than some simpler designs.
Actual performance depends on the specific design. Do not assume that every triplex mast has identical dimensions or capacity.
4. How to Choose the Right Mast
Measure the highest rack position and the available clearance under doors, beams, and ceilings.
Ask the supplier to confirm:
- Required lifting height.
- Mast lowered height.
- Overall extended height.
- Free lift, if relevant.
- Capacity at the required lifting height.
- Visibility and application requirements.
5. Do Not Choose by Mast Type Alone
The correct mast must match the forklift model, load, worksite, and operating requirements. Confirm the permitted capacity and dimensions for the complete configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a triplex mast always better than a duplex mast?
No. The best option depends on the required lift height, clearance, load, and working environment.
Why does lowered mast height matter?
It determines whether the forklift can pass through doors and under overhead obstacles.
What should I provide when requesting a quotation?
Send the required lifting height, maximum load, doorway clearance, and rack dimensions.
